What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

This type of therapy is utilised with people who want to make a change in their life. So that their love ones, people they care about, are safe around them, and they do not suffer the consequences of their behaviour. It is used in case of drug and/or alcohol addiction, violence, and/or any antisocial behaviour that leads to the detriment of others.

I have delivered rehabilitative programmes in the prison system for two years. Some people were successful, some lapsed and some relapsed.

One of the key elements for success is commitment to change and honesty. (Making changes is not an easy road).

Another key element is social support from Whanau and friends. (If you decide to stop drinking for example, your family and friends are not offering you alcoholic drinks, they may invite you for a cup of coffee at home rather than going down the Pub)

The sessions are weekly for one hour of talking, discussing. The person takes homework for the week (practising what was discussed in the session). The sessions last until the person feels confident that he/she can walk their talk with confidence.
